Honolulu, O'ahu, Hawaii

Honolulu harbor

Honolulu,  O'ahu.  Hawaii.

This morning we docked at Honolulu at 8:00Am and after having our breakfast in the lido we proceeded to the pier for our 8:50 meet for our HAL tour to Pearl Harbor.  There were 18 on board our tour bus and we had a fantastic tour with a great driver/tour guide.

Our tickets for the Pearl Harbor theater was for 10:45AM , so first we had a great tour of the city with stops to get out and take photos. Then we went to the Military Memorial Cemetery.  Thousands are buried here from WW! to today.  From here we could see Diamond Head which is one of the volcanos in Hawaii.

The Military Memorial

From there we proceeded to Pearl Harbor. It still wasn't quite time for our viewing the Introduction Movie so our guidetook us into the Museum and explained many things on view there. Then on to our movie.

After the movie we then boarded a shuttle ferryover to the Arizona Memorial.

This was a very solome and touching excursion. It is very interesting and lot's to read and just contemplate on the past and all who lost their lives on that fateful day. Just to even see the Arizona there on the bottom of the harbor under us. If you have never gone and get the chance to go it is well worth it.

Being a Canadian and especially from Nova Scotia and knowing what happened in our Halifax Harbor when the munition ships blew up was tragic, but the devastation at Pearl Harbor was even grater.  We had help as lots came to our aid, even the city of Boston sent lots of help.  But just think, Hawaii is about 5 days away from the rest of the world by ship, they would not have had help nearly as fast as we in NS did.

Part of the Arizona where she has lain ever since she was bombed on that fateful day. Notice on the water there is still some oil leaking very slowly from the Arizona.

After spending about 3 hours at Pearl Harbor we then came back to the ship. Some got off the bus at Hilo Hatties but Bob certainley didn't want any part of shopping and we were both hungry by this (2:30PM) time so we decided we would stay on the tour bus and go for lunch at the Dive In on board the Statendam.  Man those burgers are great and the fries to die for, and if we eat too many thats just what might happen.

After, I took the shuttle and went over to Hilo Hatties and bought myself a dress and then came back "home" aboard the Statendam.  .

Tonight at the Showroom at Sea there was only one performance that was at 9:30PM and it was 'Drums of Polynesia".  It was the magic & excitement of traditonal Polynesian music and dance. These were local dancers and musicians and a very nice addition to our cruise.

Then a cup of green tea on our deck and off to bed.
